"I am a professional writer and former teacher who believes in the transformative power and beauty of language. Language unlocks thought, creativity, emotion, and inspiration--in both the writer and the reader. I love helping students discover the writing potential within them, and I believe that everyone can learn the concepts behind clear argumentation, structure, style, tone, and all the other components that make for great writing. I also believe that, with a little help, great literature can be accessible and meaningful to everyone.
When you become my student, your goals become my goals--whether that's getting admitted to your dream college or acing your latest poetry explication or crafting a short story that touches your readers. In my tutoring sessions, I don't just help students with an individual piece of work; I aim to help them develop skills that will serve them on all future writing projects. I don't just hand them quick fixes; I support and guide them toward their own solutions, revisions, improvements, and discoveries.
As someone with a BA in writing and MA in literature, a background in teaching, and a professional career in journalism, I am familiar with a wide range of writing styles and techniques. My work has appeared in over a dozen publications, including academic journals. I know how to craft powerful writing. But I also know how to teach powerful writing (and those aren't necessarily the same thing!). I know how to mentor, nurture, and instruct others in both writing and literary studies because, prior to becoming a professional freelance writer, I taught literature, history, and writing at a private academy for 4 years. And before that, I taught freshman composition at the college level and tutored college students at two different university writing centers.
Overall, I've helped dozens of students improve their abilities in reading, writing, and literary understanding and deepen their love of language.
