"After thirty years as a teacher at a Quaker independent school in suburban Philadelphia, I am now tutoring students in writing and research. I believe everyone can learn to write by understanding the process of writing and practicing the necessary skills. Good writing sometimes seems like a mystery to students because they often haven't been shown the steps to move from idea to finished essay. I know I can help students feel more confident as writers.
My experience working with students from middle school through college has included assisting college students with research papers; helping high school seniors develop powerful personal essays for college admissions; teaching students literary analysis, grammar, reading, and study and organizational skills; working with students from China who attend U.S. schools; and teaching a "head start" seminar in Beijing for Chinese students coming to school in America. I know strategies to improve students’ work and help them develop more confidence in themselves as writers and researchers.
