"I have been tutoring full-time since 2015. I mostly work with high school students, though I also see middle school and college students.
Prior to 2015, I was a criminal defense attorney for 25 years. My legal work helped me develop qualities that make me a more effective tutor: strong communication skills, an ability to interact comfortably with all types of people, the patience to clearly explain complex and difficult concepts, scrupulous attention to detail, and a knack for finding the humor in any situation. As an attorney I regularly spoke about criminal law issues at continuing education conferences. I also taught Criminal Law and Procedure to community college students whose ages ranged from late teens to mid-60s.
I believe in a flexible tutoring approach that is tailored to the student’s strengths, challenges, and sensitivities. Many students underestimate their own capabilities, and I strive to foster confidence by presenting them with opportunities to demonstrate proficiency. I also aim to make sessions as fun and entertaining as possible within the context of the substantive work we are doing.
I have vast experience in helping students succeed on the SAT and ACT. In addition to working directly with countless students, I have trained dozens of tutors on how best to prepare students for these tests. My students practice with actual SATs and ACTs, which facilitates mastery of test content, test-taking strategies, and pacing.
Transforming ideas into clear and persuasive writing is a vital skill in both academic and “real world” settings. The writing process can be arduous and is understandably daunting for many students. I enjoy working with students to improve their writing in a variety of contexts – from literary analyses to history research papers to college application essays.
Please contact me with any questions or to schedule a session. I offer free consultations (online or phone) with prospective students and their parents." less...
