"I first started tutoring as a peer helper in high school. I had been told by many of my classmates that I had a gift for tutoring. Many of my classmates said that I made the lessons simpler and easier to understand. I continued tutoring through undergraduate school, and I began tutoring professionally immediately after graduation. As a teacher, I would often tutor other students who were not enrolled in my classes. I would do this for free, as my primary objective was helping the students reach their educational goals. I now tutor for two reasons: 1) There is a growing number of students at all levels of education who simply do not "get it" in the regular classroom 2) I have the subject area expertise and teaching skill necessary to help these students gain the understanding that they need to be successful in their courses and/or on certain tests.
I love to tutor math because all levels of math can be easily related to everyday life experiences. Experience has taught me students learn more and learn more effectively when they realize that what they are learning has an impact on their lives. The same idea of relativity holds for true for the sciences as well. Science is all about explaining the things we perceive (or don't perceive but nevertheless happen). Understanding science is really understanding that things are happening both inside and outside of our consciousness, and understanding that all of those things happen for a distinct purpose. I am an expert at helping students develop that understanding, which invariably leads to success in science courses.
