"I graduated from New York University with a bachelor's degree in English Literature and Psychology. I've always loved reading and excelled in all of my English classes growing up. I understand, though, that many struggle with English, whether it's with reading or whether it's with writing. I've seen the struggle first-hand when I taught English to students in Japan, as well as when I taught 2nd Grade to both native English speakers and ESL students. What I noticed helped improve my students' writing is a healthy dose of clarity and enthusiasm. Bringing both to the table and seeing students have their "aha" moments are the things that make me the most excited about teaching.
I've always loved learning, but I've also had teachers in the past who struggled to make learning an enjoyable experience. I make a concerted effort to engage with each student so they can easily see the joy in learning new things. I also aim to put the thinking on the students. Teachers can sometimes fall into the habit of telling information rather than allowing students to make discoveries and put the pieces together on their own. I aim to act as a guide with each of my students while making sure that I don't take away the magic of students reaching conclusions on their own. My favorite memories as an educator are when my students eagerly raised their hands and told the class about something they noticed, causing other students to raise their hands and build upon things the previous children said.
