"Hello, I'm Emma! I have been teaching the horn since 2016. I have mostly taught in a private lesson format, both on my own, and as a faculty member at the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. Teaching is such a fulfilling experience for me, seeing students love the music they make is one of my favorite feeling in the world.
I have had a number of wonderful teachers myself. I studied in high school with Louise MacGillavrey who now has students in professional jobs all across the country, and she was the person who first taught me how to instruct students. She had a very developed method using appropriate exersize books and dynamic descriptions of techniques that have been proven to be effective with younger students. I then did my undergraduate degree with Denise Tryon who taught me all about the structure of building an embouchure and the physical workings of playing the horn. This increased my language for and understanding of the exact motions necessary, which works wonders for adult students. I continued on to study for a year with Jim Smelser, second horn of the Chicago Symphony, who taught me how to apply these techniques in a professional setting. I am now in my Master's degree at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
With all this knowledge, I love to use etude books, solo pieces, and performances for all ages to gently push students forward towards music that makes them happy and successful." less...
