"Hi, I’m Haven! I’m a junior at UCSB, majoring in Psychological and Brain Sciences. I specialize in ACT and SAT test prep, Chemistry and Mandarin. I'm a native speaker of Mandarin, earned a 5 in AP Chemistry and became an AP Scholar with Distinction. I also scored a 35 on my ACT.
After learning from diverse teachers and professors, I’ve identified traits good educators share. I’m eager to utilize them to help you earn good grades and have fun.
The first trait: care. I want to learn all about you and work as a team. I’ll always be understanding and friendly, because I know the value of a welcoming, non-judgmental environment.
I'll also teach the most accurate and efficient solutions, and give psychological tips that help learning in general. For example, cramming is bad because the reviewed material fades away very quickly. Reviewing a little at a time is better.
Finally, I’ll have you explain how you would approach each question. My favorite professor often says, “The best way to truly understand a concept is to explain it to a friend, sibling or even a stuffed animal.” There’s also a Chinese proverb stating “Teaching is part of learning.” Having you “teach” me can further solidify your understanding.
I have three months of tutoring experience with Teach For America, teaching reading 1-on-1 to a third-grader. In classes, I focused on balancing between learning and taking breaks. Breaks helped me and my kid learn faster and gave us time to know each other. I then made learning more personalized by explaining materials through her hobbies and favorite TV shows.
During those three months, I realized more and more how rewarding teaching is. Each time my student mastered a sound or read out a paragraph, I felt so satisfied and proud that my student learned so well.
If you’re interested in working with me or have any questions, feel free to message me! I want to help!" less...
