"I’m Malka! I graduated cum laude from New York University with a dual degree in Public Health and Anthropology, and a minor in Arabic and Creative Writing. I am fluent in both English and Hebrew (modern and Biblical) and conversational in both basic Mandarin and Arabic. I have been tutoring and teaching for over a decade in different capacities. Throughout college, in addition to studying for my degree, I worked for several non-profits which provided free education across low income public schools and prisons in NYC. I not only taught, but also wrote curriculum in subjects such as English, ESL, environmental sciences and Hebrew language. After college, I was granted a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in classrooms across Taiwan, which is where I learned Mandarin over the course of two years. While my Mandarin is merely conversational, and not strong enough to tutor in, being an adult language learner has made me a better language teacher.
I always say that we as teachers have as much to learn from our students as we aim to teach them. This is paramount in understanding my approach to teaching. I am passionate about teaching language in the same way that I am passionate about learning it myself. I want to help my students achieve their goals, whatever they might be. Whether they are aiming to perform better in school, or they simply want to learn a language as a hobby, my aim is always to meet my students where they’re at, and build a lesson plan which caters to how they learn best, and where they are looking to go.
When we meet, I will assess the student’s current abilities and their big picture goals. We discuss the practicalities (how often can we meet, what time frame we are operating under) and I will come back with a plan of action to help them get there. I aim to make each session enjoyable and full of practical knowledge, and will provide resources to practice more at home. Please feel free to contact me with any and all questions, or to schedule our first session!" less...
