"I graduated in Mathematics from Cornell University and taught in public schools at LAUSD until 2022 when I retired from full time teaching, though my Credential is valid through 2030. I often stayed after school to tutor students in the tutoring programs, and saw some brilliant students who had a lot of questions about math topics, and did not get their answers in the classroom settings and fell behind, and got help in tutoring. I saw some students with learning differences, who benefited from individualized teachings. Before getting my credential, I had substitute taught all ages from pre K -12th graders. At the present I work with some students at Lausd, who are pulled out of classes for extra help, and some others for enrichment to get ahead of their class level.
As a LAUSD math teacher, I had taught online classes during COVID, and Lausd gave us a great deal of very informative and effective trainings. My additional bachelor degree in fine art from SFAI, helps me with using drawings to show math topics visually. It makes math easier to understand for those who learn visually. I have taught Pre Algebra, Algebra l, Algebra ll, Geometry, and AP Statistics, at Lausd Middle and High schools. I had tutored students in secondary afterschool programs, and students of all ages (K-12) at Mathnasium during 2023-24, in different math subjects.
Strategies that I use in tutoring are Modeling, Using questions, using analogy, breaking down the problems into smaller problems, backward planning, drawing, and color coding. My focus in tutoring is to lead the students in discovering the topic on their own. I help them find their questions, and be specific. Then I lead them to find the answers on their own. I try to convey my joy of working with Math to my students, and more often than not, they get very excited about learning math! My hope is to help more students to learn how to analyze, by using mathematical thinking. I hope to help more and more students to succeed in their classes and raise their grades." less...
