"Hello, I'm Thomas, a generalist one-on-one tutor based in New York City. I've always loved learning in both math and the humanities, as shown by my achievements; as an undergraduate at Gustavus Adolphus College, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with majors in Mathematics and English, and won first place in my school's academic writing contest twice in a row. I also went on to get my MFA in Game Design (more on that later) from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
I've been tutoring since 2015. I'm most experienced with SAT/ACT prep, consistently raising students' scores (3-5 points in all ACT subjects, 100-200 points in all SAT subjects), but have also tutored for class subjects. My best subjects are Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Statistics) and English (Reading and especially Writing!). I work mostly with high-school aged students and older. I would summarize my style as getting students to share their thought process, and then have confidence in it. When a process is not yielding results, I ask questions to encourage revision, and then help the student try again with their new approach. My goal is to show students that their thinking is never "bad", and that they have the power to find the answers themselves.
Something else that informs my tutoring is my former career as a professional video game designer. I frequently use games as examples when teaching to make learning less intimidating. As a game designer, I've used both computer programming (C#, Objective-C, Python, etc.), and writing (creative and technical) to make real games! As a result, I have a plethora of "real world examples" to pull from, which are great for students who question the need for study.
Tutoring is my top priority at the moment, so I am highly available and respond to inquiries quickly. If you are curious about a subject I didn't mention, please reach out, as I may still be able to tutor in it, potentially at a differential rate. I wish good luck to all students in their learning journey!" less...
