"I recently graduated from the University of Iowa with a double major in Mathematics and Statistics. Regarding graduation, I moved down to Dallas to pursue a Master's of Science in Business Analytics from Southern Methodist University. Throughout my entire academic career (High School to now Grad School) I have enjoyed explaining topics in greater detail to my classmates. Not only do I receive satisfaction from my classmates being able to better understand the material and gain confidence in themselves, but I enjoy thinking about the topic of discussion in alternative ways to build an analogy that I think the student will comprehend.
I believe tutoring is a win-win because of the results the tutor and student receive from the deep conversations about the topic. My biggest goal when tutoring is not only for the student to develop an understanding of the topic but also to develop an interest in learning the material and appreciating the process of understanding.
The thing that makes me an outstanding math tutor would be my patience along with my general interest in math. In all of my classes throughout High School to now Graduate School, I feel as if my coursework was the best or top of the line for my class. I receive satisfaction from initially not knowing what I am trying to comprehend, breaking down the problem into smaller problems I can understand, then building it all back together to understand the problem as a whole. This strategy to tackle problems has worked for me and is the method I use to help others. I think about what sort of problems they have answered or I believe are in their wheelhouse, then simplify the problem into a problem that does not make them lose focus by quitting before starting, then patiently guiding them into the bigger problem so they understand how it all goes together.
