"I received my PhD from Harvard in African and African American Studies. I began my teaching career in the NYCDOE in the Bronx in 2004, and I taught there until I entered graduate school in 2007. While in graduate school, I had the pleasure of teaching 7th and 8th grade for four years at The Bement School, an independent school in Deerfield, MA. I taught at Hunter College High School working with 8th, 10th, and 12th graders, and I also taught 10th, 11th and 12th grade at The Winchendon School's New York campus. I have also taught on the college level.
I have both taught and tutored students over the years, and I enjoy both. Students sometimes ask me why I became a teacher. I tell them that it is because I have always enjoyed working with younger students, and I have also been lucky enough to have had many amazing teachers who have positively influenced my life and inspired me to follow in their footsteps professionally.
I have both an undergraduate and a graduate degree in English from two Ivy League Universities. Through my doctoral work, I have had the opportunity to gain extensive content knowledge of classic literature, and my experience teaching secondary school has made me familiar with young adult literature as well. I have worked with struggling readers and writers at all levels and in various settings, which makes me uniquely qualified to help a diverse range of students.
My patience and sense of humor are two additional qualities that make me a great tutor and teacher. I know that many students who want tutoring have been struggling with English, so I use patience to try to alleviate some of the stress that the student may already feel regarding the subject. If you are struggling with middle, high school, or college-level English, or feel like you need additional challenge, contact me to find out more about my background, expertise, and availability. Hopefully we can make a match!" less...
