"I was born and raised in the United States, but as an adult I was blessed to live as a missionary in some of the countries where the languages I teach are spoken (Spain, Mexico, Italy). This missionary work was especially focused on teaching of young people, but I also taught adults. I taught extensively in schools in Mexico, Italy and the United States, as well as shorter stints in Canada and Ireland, and a few other countries. This international experience explains my interest in people, languages, and culture.
The missionary work included classroom teaching, counseling, and school supervision: trying to achieve the maximum progress and achievement for each student. I have taught literally hundreds of students.
I hold two Masters degrees (Philosophy and Theology) from universities in Rome, Italy, receiving Magna Cum Laude in both. I also have two Bachelor degrees in Philosophy and Theology from Rome, Italy, and a diploma in Classical Humanities from an institution in Salamanca, Spain; again receiving Magna Cum Laude in these studies.
In tutoring foreign languages I try to assess the needs of each student and build a personal plan that suits their goals, curriculum, and learning style. Sometimes we just need a little personal help to really make improvements, so my style of tutoring is usually more that of an encouraging coach or cheerleader. I find that most people learn better with positive reinforcement.
I also look for ways to make learning a language fun and exciting, incorporating culture, music, art, food, and travel destinations into the lessons. Regarding Spanish, I often give my students small phrases to practice when interacting with native Spanish speakers here in the United States, since there are now opportunities every day to use Spanish. Getting positive reactions from native speakers can increase a student's sense of accomplishment and encourage him or her to continue.
Regarding those who might be interested in tutoring in literature or Bible studies: Looking for a deeper meaning in li" less...
