"Hello, my name is Nikolas. I am currently an undergraduate student at Florida State University for biological sciences and chemistry.
Prior to my attendance at FSU, I went to American Heritage School of Palm Beach County. During my time there, I was: awarded National Commended Scholar, on the Honor Roll for the tenth (both semesters) eleventh (both semesters) and twelfth (for the first semester) grades, awarded Recognition of Excellence : Biology and Recognition of Excellence : Chemistry, inducted into National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society, and English Honors Society. In the end, I graduated with a 5.43 GPA (unweighted - 4.34) and received my high school diploma.
I experienced a variety of teachers and professors. While some were effective teachers, many were not. From this, I have learned aspects of effective teaching that I incorporate into sessions of tutoring. Students must actively engage with the content and build upon past information to truly grasp a concept and succeed in a class, I make sure to accomplish just that. Additionally, study skills are a vital aspect of improving. Oftentimes I would find myself having to teach content to myself. To assist students, I relay what I found to be proper studying techniques in order to prepare them both outside of tutoring sessions and for future academic success.
I have followed this methodology since the tenth grade of high school. Throughout my time tutoring, I have engaged with all types of students (elementary to college) and subjects (math, history, science, and English). For example, in the 11nth grade, I tutored high school and middle school students in chemistry and biology for a year. During these sessions, students would bring questions and concepts they struggled with most. To combat this, the sessions were typically divided into explanation, discussion, and practice (practice test and questions they provided). Outside of the sessions, I made sure to be readily accessible throughout the day and intend to do the same here." less...
