"Hi, I'm Adrian! I'm a graduate student studying hydrology and climate modeling. My background is in geology and mathematics. I graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science in Geology and minors in Mathematics and Earth Data Science. My academic history has shaped my approach to tutoring: I started college in a high school completion program after dropping out of high school specifically because of how difficult math was for me. But in college I realized how much of a difference a teacher who's passionate about math education and who respects their students can make. I started in rudimentary arithmetic and ended in 300-level group and number theory; now, I apply partial differential equations and multivariate calculus to the study of Earth science.
This experience means that I approach students at whatever level they're at and focus on filling existing gaps preventing success--classes often don't dedicate much time to review, and if you're in an algebra class but haven't quite mastered addition and multiplication, then I'll happily help fill those gaps your courses might not review. I also love inspiring exploration of math as a subject, so if you want to chat about higher mathematical theory, we can do that in the context of anything you're learning! I also have research, technical paper writing, and science communication experience--I'm happy to have a pre-appointment discussion to ensure I feel confident I can address your questions before you commit. My general approach to science tutoring, after specific questions, is teaching you how to answer your own questions in the future using textbooks, papers, etc.
I worked as an arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, derivative calculus, and geology tutor at Portland Community College from 2018 - 2021 (in class, group drop-in, 1:1 virtual), and as an algebra and math confidence tutor at Portland State University in 2023 (in class, 1:1 in person and virtual). In between those two I tutored other geology students in my undergrad program (1:1)." less...
