"My name is Kaela! I am currently in my fifth year of my PhD studying Molecular Cellular Biology a specializing in Microbiology and fungal pathogens at Stony Brook University. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my B.S in Biology from Wagner College. While I was at Wagner, I did a year of research working on two projects. One of which I performed at Johns Hopkins University in a cancer lab, and the second was at Wagner looking into the molecular mechanisms of fertilizations.
When I graduated from Wagner College during the summer before I entered graduate school I was a teacher for the Institute of Reading teaching K-12 to work on their reading and comprehesion skills. During this time, I learned many skills on how to relate to my students on an individual level to help comprehend the material of each lesson. I learned what they liked and disliked in general to help them gain better understanding of the concepts being learned in class.
When I entered graduate school, I took these skills and applied them to the classes I had to TA. I was a TA for the academic year for two different classes, one of was a entry level biology lecture and the second was entry level biology lab. The lecture course I had to review and grade students discussion homework posts to see if they understood the concepts presented in class. The lab course, I taught students the basic molecular and cellular techniques in a lab and also walked students through the scientific method, how to formulate hypothesis, and how to test these hypothesis.
As for teaching experience, I still continue to teach biology, biochemistry, and microbiology classes at Farmingdale State College and Wagner College. Now I want to open up and tutor students in these subjects to help them progress in their biology courses and majors." less...
