"I’m Anna! My love for math started in college when I decided to be a math teacher. The thrill of working through hard problems until things clicked and I could find the solution enticed me to pursue a degree teaching high school mathematics. I graduated from Kansas State University with a degree to teach high school mathematics. For the last 15 years I have taught 9th-12th grade mathematics. During my first years of teaching I completed a Master’s of Math degree at Emporia State University. Courses I have taught include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus (concurrent enrollment), College Algebra (community college), College Mathematics/Quantitative Literacy (concurrent enrollment and community college), AP Calculus AB, and Financial Algebra.
I know what it is like to struggle through math problems! I believe struggling is what it takes to learn and so I continue to find fun math problems to solve on my own so that I experience struggle with math and can relate to my students when they are struggling with problems that I give them. When I work with students on a math problem I try different approaches. Those approaches include me asking questions to find where a student is stuck so I know how to give the right hint. I guide students to figure out problems on their own so that they can make the connections necessary to understand the topics. I also work to make a problem simpler by using different numbers or relating the problem back to something the student knows how to do. I encourage the use of visuals to make meaning.
