"My name is Jimmy and I was a high school teacher for many years before moving back to California. For the past four years I served as a pastor at my local church, working with elementary, middle school, high school and college students. I graduated with a double major in social sciences and education from New York University and received my Masters Degree in Education from Relay Graduate School in NY.
When I was a high school student, I struggled with understanding remembering too many details and making sense of complicated issues. Then, I asked an after school tutor for some help and this was a life-changing moment. My tutor broke down complex concepts into the basic foundational ideas and helped me build up my understanding from that point on. My approach in teaching has always been to focus on mastering the basics of any subject and using one's own reasoning to build from there. I have seen the most breakthrough in my students when they were able to deconstruct any subject into its foundational ideas rather than brute forcing their way through hours of memorization.
My own success demonstrates the effectiveness of this tutoring method. I went from reading below grade level and failing math classes to passing 7 AP courses with a score of 5 (European history, Biology, US History, Calculus, English Language, English literature, Government), which earned me the award for AP Scholar with distinction.
