"I'm a rising senior in the College of Arts & Science at UPenn, pursuing a degree in Computational Cognitive Science and a minor in Both Computer Science and Spanish. I grew up in Burlington, Vermont and attended public school there from second grade until graduation. Growing up I had some great teachers, and then some others that weren't so great, and unfortunately this largely shaped how I viewed the subjects they taught. It was always easier to learn from the teachers I connected with and who supported me, and luckily there were a lot. But I had friends who struggled in subjects that I loved because they didn't get it and I would make it my goal to help them to appreciate, or at least understand the subjects like I did. I transitioned from helping friends in High School to becoming an official tutor in college, but my method is pretty much the same. Rather than act like a teacher, I like to get to know the students I'm helping and treat our lessons in a much more casual way. I teach topics in the way that I understand them, go over practice problems and encourage lots of questions. I usually suggest some problems to do between sessions, and am always available to chat and answer questions outside of the scheduled meeting time.

I've been doing this for about 3 years now, and have worked with 5 different peers at my university as well as a handful of middle school and High School students from my hometown. I've also experienced tutoring from the receiving end, as I had a particularly difficult time in a computer programming class the fall of my junior year. I've seen what works for other students, and what has worked for me as well and seek to apply to that to each new tutee while taking into account their own feedback.
