"I teach English to both native born and ESL students. In college I majored in History and English, graduated, and then went right into journalism where I could report, write and satisfy my curiosity about the big, wide world. I covered many topics from civil rights, to the arts, to crime, to eduction, to politics, to food and wine. During this period, I evolved into a magazine editor, helping writers focus their pieces and restructure them to make them publishable. This was one of the most enjoyable parts of my job, and I realized that it was a one-on-one version of the college writing classes I was also teaching at the same time. I loved both. Soon, I left magazines, began tutoring in English and writing, and seven years ago, got certified as a teacher of ESL. My journalism career, with its broad exposure to so many parts of life, has greatly enriched my teaching and made interactions between me and my students interesting and fun.
Depending on a student's needs, I work with a lesson plan and textbook materials, or with the student's own manuscript that they want edited. Students are surprised and gratified at how quickly they become more confident and competent readers, writers and speakers of English through tutoring. I am very available to my students." less...
