"A poster hanging on the wall of my classroom reads:
How to be a math person:

One of my core beliefs as an educator is that everyone is capable of learning math to high levels. Historically, math teaching has had a very narrow approach, largely relying on the "I do, we do, you do" model. This approach only works for a small sector of students who manage to make sense of the math on their own, while others flounder, struggling to remember all of the rules and procedures modeled by teachers throughout the years. Best practices now suggest that a broader, sense-making, problem-solving approach to learning makes the math make sense, and once it makes sense, there is no longer the need to carry the burden of memorization. As Pam Harris says, "Math is figuroutable."
My tutoring business was borne of a desire to spend more time engaging students in these types of high-impact learning experiences that have empowered students at my school to see themselves as capable mathematicians. With training in Math Recovery, an M.Ed in K-8 education, over 10 years over experience teaching math, and informed by hours of research on best practices in math intervention, I began offering math tutoring services in 2022.
I currently work with students in preschool through eighth grade, supporting their math learning however I can - whether they need extra support, extra challenge, or just something a little different. I have extensive experience with neurodivergence and learning differences, understand the IEP/504 process, and enjoy the challenge of working with all kinds of learners. I works with students of all races, colors, religions, sexes, sexual orientations, gender identities/expressions, and national origins." less...
