As a Graduate Instructor for a Data Analysis course at UC Berkeley, I helped Education Grad students with questions and review, as well as co-taught a computer lab section. More recently, I have been tutoring Math in the Bellevue area, including as a VIBES volunteer (Bellevue School District) and at Singapore Math Club.
I love bringing kids to those “aha” moments when a math concept makes more sense and is not a rote manipulation of symbols. Depending on your child’s needs, we can work together on homework, problems from classwork, or on some of the skills that they don’t have time for in school but that serve well in higher learning. For example, I can help students use their notes and textbooks, and I often show them ways to check their work.
For Elementary and some Middle School math, depending on your student’s needs, I can help with schoolwork and homework using the school’s books or use other materials. For younger students, I believe in manipulatives and games to build number sense, as well as textbooks and workbooks. For Algebra onward, I work primarily with the school's materials and look for supplements as needed.
In middle school, students learn study skills they’ll need in high school and beyond. Students with organizational challenges may need more support or guidance. For example, in math, they may need guidelines on how to spatially lay out a problem to make it legible. For other subjects we can discuss tools to help student feel confident and organized." less...
