"I have loved teaching since I first began tutoring as an undergrad at Johns Hopkins University. My academic and research interests are in applying simulations of protein variant molecules to human disease...so I have always lived at the intersection of math, biology, chemistry, and computer science. Working in these diverse fields has convinced me that anyone can learn anything - and usually knows it already, they just need to find a similar experience. There is nothing more rewarding to me than hearing a lifelong fiction writer say I helped them understand chemical bonding or a life science enthusiast say they're now inspired to learn calculus.
I specialize in tutoring university-level math and science course, particularly to students with social science or computer science backgrounds. I am new to Wyzant but have tutored over 100 hours while at Johns Hopkins University and been a Teaching Assistant for 5 STEM courses at JHU and NYU.
I always want my students to feel comfortable researching and exploring on their own. Even if it leads to fewer hours, I find motivating inquiry and a handful of resources help students fly on their own without my assistance (though I'm always happy to move deeper into each subject).
Despite my lifelong love of science, I have not always had a strong math background. I specifically went into engineering because I knew it would challenge my mathematical ability and force me to understand the subjects closer to my heart (biology and chemistry) in terms of variables and equations. I've found that almost everyone has a strong mathematical intuition - but the jargon and symbols can become overwhelming. When teaching math, I always try to learn how each student best visualizes and represents the equations needed so I can show them how they're understanding isn't wrong - they just need to learn the shared representation.
I recently completed my Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and have an Undergraduate Degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I live everyday at the intersection" less...
