"During my years in the classroom, my favorite experiences were when I paused for a moment after asking just the right question, and watched a student come to their own understanding. One-to-one tutoring gives me the opportunity to do this and gives the student the confidence that they can.
My thirty years of classroom experience has me so familiar with the content of all math courses that I can quickly assess what is causing a student difficulty, and meet them exactly where they are. I love sharing with students how different topics in mathematics are connected and making sure they have the proper background to understand the content they are currently struggling with. I have an arsenal of teaching tools for any area of mathematics in grades 7 through 12, including calculus. I share with students visual aids and technologies that make the math make more sense. I have found that often the instruction given in the classroom is simply the mechanics of how to do it since the bigger picture is obvious to the instructor. In calculus especially, the students whom I tutor have a greater understanding when I explain how calculus works in a broad sense. Then, we can hash out the details of how to do it.
I am acutely aware that by the time a student seeks out tutoring, their self-confidence may be crushed. Rebuilding their self-esteem is one of the first steps to their success, and from there I give them the tools they need to take responsibility for their own learning. Tutoring is so rewarding for me, I feel driven to ensure that the student understands and I come away with satisfaction when I know they do.
In addition to teaching and tutoring, I can be found helping my own children and their friends with their homework at the kitchen table. I also teach skiing and enjoy other outdoor activities such as running, hiking, gardening and paddling.
I look forward to hearing from you so we can turn things around and give you confidence in your potential for success. Let’s schedule a meeting and make math happen." less...
