"For the past 3 years I have been a tutor for SUNY at Buffalo's Center for Academic and Developmental Services (CADS). There, I have learned to deal with a wide variety of students ranging from liberal arts majoring in art, to those in my chosen major (math/physics). All of them had a common problem with understanding mathematics and/or Physics. I generally take the stance that not everyone understands these subject matters as I do and to assume so would further the frustration felt by the student in learning such material. This causes me to make more assumptions that something I say may not work to their advantage, and so I attempt to reword such sentences in order to deliver the maximum amount of clarity possible. I have also taken part in 4 successive Summer Bridge programs wherein incoming freshmen (to UB) spend 3 weeks living the life of a student going through freshman year. We give them classes, schedules, homework and something similar to recitations for these classes. This aids in helping students acclimate themselves to the college atmosphere before even setting foot on a college campus for their first year.
I recently gained my BS in Mathematical Physics and BS in Mathematics from the University at Buffalo in Amherst New York, and have returned to for graduate school this past fall 2011. I have always enjoyed sharing my knowledge of mathematics and physics with everyone who has ever asked a question about the world we live in. It's no doubt that the greatest joy in life is when you see a student suddenly realize that they do in fact understand something that has been plaguing them for days weeks or even years. I have seen students who list math as their wore subject walk away with the grade they want to get and a reasonable level of confidence when walking into exams.
My love of Mathematics and Physics is only surpassed by my love of sharing it with everyone else." less...
