"I'm Brenna! A dedicated and certified high school English teacher in New York City looking to continue my passions over the summer. I graduated summa cum laude from both Syracuse University as an undergrad and New York University as a graduate student. I studied Elementary Education, Special Education, Disability Studies, and English as a Second Language. Throughout my studies in specialized education, my biggest takeaway was that everyone learns differently. We all experience the world through our own lens based on our values and backgrounds. My aspiration as a teacher is to provide a safe space for students to explore their individuality, using English as a tool to express themselves. I bring this perspective to my tutoring experience by creating an individualized experience for each student. Learning is not a one size fits all, and I am happy to explore various approaches that will allow you the greatest opportunity to be successful. A skeletal structure I follow is an opening reflective period, followed by direct instruction with examples, ending in independent work with guided support. This is subject to change based on a student's needs.
I have worked with students in many settings. From volunteering at a local refugee center to tutor middle school aged students with their English homework, to tutoring one-on-one with first graders in reading fluency and phonics, to teaching class sizes of thirty-four ninth and tenth grade students through debates, literary analyses of books, and preparation for the English Regents, I have truly learned to be a chameleon! Personally, I find the most gratification in aiding students in their writing and reading. Not only is it a personal passion of mine, but I believe there is something special about escaping into uncharted territories in books and sharing such unique and introspective thoughts in writing.
I aspire for every one of my students to have access to as many opportunities as possible. Please contact me with any questions or inquiries for scheduling!" less...
