"My name is Ashley! I graduated from Ball State University with a bachelors degree in Family and Consumer Sciences and a minor in Human Development and Psychology. Growing up I always had a natural desire to learn and develop my skills for life in the future. That desire carried over into working with children during college when I saw the impact my teaching could have on students. I was a preschool teacher for many years and before that I was teacher in younger classrooms. I had up to 20 kids to teach but I still found time to help any student who didn’t understand the subject matter. Sometimes that would required thinking out side of the box. An example would be when I helped a student learn to write his name. I had him trace the letters first, focusing on one letter at a time. In a couple weeks he was able to write his name. Soon he was writing others words, as well.

I also volunteered as a big sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, where I spent time helping my little sister who was in middle school. I helped her develop confidence in herself by gently pushing her past her comfort zone. My focus was on giving her the tools and the drive to continuously grow, as she was shy in social situations. At the end of my volunteer time with her she was able to be in social situations with confidence. I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their potential by setting goals and accomplishing them.

My tutoring would be in subjects related to English and History. I will meet the student on their level and focus on one area at a time. I think it’s a crucial that a student masters the material before moving on to the next area of learning. I want the subject to be interesting and interactive for the student.
