"Hi, I'm Andrea! I am a conservation biologist and biological anthropologist and I also teach writing at an Ivy League university. I earned a BA in Psychology with a minor in Biology from the University of Virginia, and a PhD in Anthropology from Boston University. I study wild primates and nutritional ecology, so I have real-life experience in ecology and conservation biology. I am very lucky to get to do the research I do, but teaching is my first passion. I prepared myself to be an excellent instructor by participating in a National Science Foundation K-12 STEM teaching fellowship where I received training and taught middle-school science classes to a diverse group of students. Since then, I have taught at three universities, two of which were Ivy League.
My approach to teaching is guided by my own reading disability (which went undiagnosed until after my PhD) and how I learned to use organizational and study skills to compensate for this and excel in school. I know what it is like to feel "behind", and I work to build confidence and skills in my students in the classroom and in tutoring. I try to reach every student through inclusive and multimedia lessons, clear objectives, and check-ins to make sure that we are meeting your goals.
I have more than 10 years experience in tutoring middle-, high-school, and college students, as well as graduate students working on any stage of their dissertations. I currently teach in the classroom, but am equally comfortable in virtual lessons. I teach writing across the disciplines and a variety of anthropology, biology, and ecology classes. I have several publications in peer-reviewed journals and am happy to assist with academic writing and communications in any format, including posters and podcasts.
As your tutor, I will meet you where you are. I will be committed to helping you or your child to not only complete, but also understand lessons. I will empower you with organizational and skills that will get you through future learning experiences." less...
