"Hi, I'm Jacob! I am a tutor in science and math, as well as the SATs and ACT-- I got a 2300 on my SAT, a 100th percentile MCAT, and am dedicated to helping you achieve your own academic excellence. I am a graduate of Brown University with a 4.0 GPA in Neuroscience, and a current medical student at Johns Hopkins. Education is one of my passions, and I have years of experience working with high schoolers to improve their scores in a way that is fun, simple and engaging.
I offer the following as my educational philosophy: Using these principles, I have helped many students raise their grades and achieve their goals.
First: Review and solidify fundamental skills-- Often students are struggling in math or science because of some piece of material from long ago that they never totally understood. Whether it is exponent rules or kinematics equations, we go back so that students can move forward.
Second: understanding WHY --Usually students are taught a series of disconnected rules, without any explanation of why it all works. Why DOES F=MA? What is the point of the unit circle? By understanding why these concepts work and why they are important, students gain a deeper sense of confidence and when see these concept in a new setting, such as in a tricky SAT problem, they are much better prepared.
Finally: sparking joy-- I show students the fun side of math and science. As students come to see that math and science can be enjoyable, they unlock those moments of curiosity and connection that foster deeper, more enduring learning.
When we start working together, most of my students claim that they are "not math people", or "not science people". My aim is to challenge that assumption. I have seen that anyone can unlock those "aha" moments of connection, where you see why sine and cosine work, or suddenly get that those ribosomes are inside of every cell in your body. It is my experience that better grades and deeper understanding go hand in hand, and I look forward to helping you achieve both." less...
