"My name is Betsy J. I am a K-12 certified teacher in the areas of English as a Second Language and Exceptional Education. I have worked with students in all grades including elementary, middle, high and adult students. In my years of experience with foreign language speakers, I have learned that all students have unique and special needs. I do not believe in a cookie cutter approach to teaching. Students have various learning styles wherein some are visual learners, but others are more auditory learners. Providing accommodations such as extended time, organizers, visual aids, modeling task completion, building background knowledge, coaching in reading, and scaffolding are all essential components for successful learning.

My experience in elementary classes includes assisting students with math, English, science, reading, writing, and social studies. For middle school students, I taught reading, writing, English, math, and social studies. My most recent teaching assignment was in high school in which I was responsible for teaching English, social studies, reading, basic computer skills, and writing. In addition to full size classes, I also had a small group of 9 students whom I tutored and were struggling in the general classroom. By the end of the school year, those students received A’s and B’s in all subject areas. In addition to K-12 experience, I taught ESL students in adult education for over four years. My students continually increased in ESL testing scores and many were able to advance to receiving their GED. I taught citizenship classes in which my students had a 99% pass rate for their citizenship exam. Additionally, my students learned basic computer skills and life skills such as completing job applications and writing resumes’.
