While my children were growing up, I recognized the importance of making sure my kids, each summer, were fully prepared for the next school year by either reviewing or assisting with some trouble areas. And it doesn’t have to be boring – we did some fun activities that reviewed skills in math and reading using games and online activities.
Fast forward, until my youngest was finishing HS, and I started working as a Paraprofessional in learning support, in a K-3 elementary building in Peters Township. For the last 8 years, I have supported students to improve skills in small and 1 on 1 groups in the school setting. I am familiar with the Read Naturally reading program and Canvas and Clever software. Two years ago, I started tutoring students after school 1 on 1 in their home (library is fine too). Sessions generally lasted 1hour/2x’s week and we focused on whatever math or reading skills the parents/teachers felt most important. This last year, 1 of my tutoring students was actually a student in my building so (with parents permission) I was able to work w the teacher as well to tailor our sessions. For summer, that’s not usually possible, but we can use information from past work/tests to set up activities.
In the summer, I usually recommend meeting 1-2 times/week depending on goals. And while nice to have a routine day/time to meet, I am flexible to changing things around vacation and summer fun." less...
