"Hello! I've tutored privately and volunteered as a tutor and mentor for kids of all ages for around 14 years now, and teaching is my passion and profession. I currently teach math and social studies in a private middle and high school, and I formerly taught Religion and French full time to high school students. I completed my Bachelor’s in Religion and French but have always had extensive interest and experience tutoring and learning math and science. English is my first language, but I am native bilingual with Egyptian Arabic. I see teaching as my life’s purpose.
I have almost 7 years experience tutoring/teaching high school math and science: algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2, pre calculus, and physics. I have been tutoring SATs for almost ten years as well.
I was a swim instructor at a local YMCA, teaching people of all ages from 4 to 66, most of whom went from fearing water to swimming/treading in around 6 to 10 weeks. This has helped me become especially skilled helping students with different (sometimes extreme) aversions to learning as I've found ways to build confidence and comfort in the face of frustrating academic situations. Patience and compassion are not only virtues, but valuable skills!
Most importantly, teaching is much more than just knowing the subject; it is the ability to pass it successfully to the student. It is my job to be flexible and engaging while bringing life and value to the subjects. For example, an elementary student of mine was uninterested in fractions, and struggling with word problems. I took an apple from the kitchen and told him to think about a scenario in which he'd need to share his apple with his sister, and his attitude began to shift to curiosity and interest.
I provide background and explanation and then ask my students questions for critical thinking and deep connections to material. Concepts must be deeply understood--otherwise skills from drills become forgotten immediately once finished.
My students leave feeling encouraged and well equipped." less...
