"Hello! I’m an experienced kindergarten teacher in Montgomery County Maryland. I graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I am certified to teach Orton Gillingham, which is a phonics based reading program that I use with my students and the children that I tutor. With this program, I provide a hands on learning approach to teach students phonics, which then translates to reading skills.
I have been teaching for 7 years and have been tutoring for 3 years. In my tutoring sessions, I use a variety of learning activities and games to help students make progress on the targeted skill. I work with the parents to understand what skills to focus on and then use progress monitoring data to see how the students are progressing. Each session I use a variety of engaging activities and games that help students learn, but also have fun!
I believe learning and teaching math can be related to real world situations, so I do my best to incorporate fun experiences when teaching math. I am trained in using Eureka math and I am very familiar with common core math.
When teaching reading and writing, I use a lot of strategies from the Orton Gillingham approach. I teach students the importance of learning sight words (called red words) in this method and we use kinesthetic movements to remember the words. When reading, we start with decodable books, meaning all of the words have regular sounds that students can stretch out phonetically. Providing these books first helps students gain confidence in their reading abilities.
I have been teaching kindergarten for 7 years, so I have a strong knowledge of how to teach students how to write their letters. I use verbal pathways to teach students how to write their letters. For instance, for the letter “d” the verbal pathway is “start like a c, go up talllll and then down”. These directions help students understand how to make letters the correct way.
