"Hi, I'm Kevin! I'm an advanced PhD student in linguistics with eight years of experience teaching at the college level. In my experience, the most memorable skills you can learn are the ones that you figure out on your own, and that's what I try to do in my tutoring. Whether you are trying to learn a spoken language, a programming language, or analytic skills in linguistics, I always bring lots of examples and data to my tutoring sessions. In language tutoring, I start with something memorable and motivated - like song lyrics or useful phrases - because these are the things that you will rely on until you get the hang of a foreign language. In my tutoring for computational linguistics and Python, I will patiently and without judgment guide you through breaking down a large project into smaller component tasks that will come up over and over again when you are coding.
I was a teaching assistant for undergraduate students from 2015 to the end of 2020, which put me in charge of regular data analysis sections, well-visited group and individual office hours, and exam practice/review sessions. The classes I have most often offered student support for are first language acquisition (child language development), psychology of language, and I also tutored for an introductory Python course in a computational linguistics series. Since my time as a teaching assistant and tutor, I have been a language instructor for four college German classes using an immersion method and a professor of several linguistics courses including computational linguistics and natural language processing (NLP), syntax (grammar), historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and animal communication.
Students choose me for my patience, attention to individual needs, and the rich and memorable examples I bring to my teaching. I love to see students achieve their goals and gain a sense of confidence in their knowledge and skills! If you think I'm a good fit for you, send me a message and I'll get back to you right away!" less...
