"I have been teaching the Spanish language (all levels) to high school students for the last 17 years and consider myself a constant learner. One of my strengths happens to be in the grammatical rules of both Spanish and English and how best to explain to someone who is not a native speaker of the language. There is a variety of students I teach, all able to learn. Although I may not teach English or literature regularly, comparative literature was my major in college and also something I was passionate about. Because of this, I have been able to successfully tutor students in English, literature, and writing, as well as Test Prep with verbal/writing sections on the SAT and ACT.
What I love about tutoring is spreading the enthusiasm I have about the subject to my students (if it is subject tutoring), or boosting the confidence of my students before a standardized test. What I have found is that when a student's confidence rises, so does his or her performance. To see that look of fear leave a student's eyes is one of the most rewarding things about tutoring.
My creativity in lessons grants me the ability to take something that may not be the most interesting concept and make it perhaps a little more interesting (using games, activities, etc). My ability to understand what a struggling non-native speaker of the language may experience during the learning a new language process also helps me to identify with the students and give them tips on how to best learn a foreign language, as well as appreciate learning a second language.
My major in undergrad was Comparative literature, which by nature, hones in on the critical thinking and analytical skills needed to perform well on tests like the ACT and SAT verbal/writing sections. Because of my knack for grammar rules with both English and Spanish, I have been able to aid students in remembering the best tips and skills for writing sections." less...
