"Hello and welcome!
I am a certified Spanish teacher offering tutoring in levels 1-4 and AP Spanish Language and Culture. I am also certified to teach English as another language (TESOL) and an approved instructor of Early College Experience Philosophy (UCONN course). While living in Mexico for 8 years, I created a cultural study abroad program through the Universidad Latina de America and designed many courses and conferences in Spanish for university students. In the last 20 years I've taught middle school, high school and university in the United States and abroad, in high need area codes as well as high performing. I love all learners regardless of background, educational level, age or zip code.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in culturally responsive teaching; I consider the culture, perspective and experiences a student arrives with as a point of departure and find ways to build off of that knowledge. Students have assets and building onto their existing knowledge helps cement concepts as well as make the content relevant. My job is to identify what students know, how they learn best, and design relevant lessons that work toward their educational goals. Relationships are key to learning and I work hard to make the lessons engaging and interesting, so students want to come to class.
Language is culture, so every lesson will connect to an aspect of culture. Language is also repetition and practice, so every lesson relies heavily on student engagement (speaking! drills!) If my background and teaching style resonates with you, please reach out! I'm here to support your goals." less...
