I love students who are passionate about creativity! Though many are interested in the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition, I do not accept private students only pursuing this event; however, in the summer, I offer a class focusing solely on creating future entries for Scholastic. For beginning students, I refer you to the education center where I teach a variety of levels.
Judging experience:
I have been a national judge for Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for six years and judged numerous public speaking competitions.
What do I teach?
With fiction: compelling description, rich dialogue, character development, and advanced plotting. Non-fiction: organizational techniques but with an eye toward originality. My students love to switch genres!
Philosophy?
I believe that anyone, including children, can learn professional skills that lead to a fulfilled creative life. My teaching style is fun, entertaining, and encouraging but also direct and honest.
Availability:
I live in Barcelona, Spain, six hours ahead of EST. During the school year, I tutor on the weekends. California students must be available in the mornings. For homeschooled students and adults, weekday times are possible.
Bio:
A member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators for the past 20 years, I assumed the top regional leadership role for the organization, helping people pursue publishing dreams. I have two traditionally-published, award-winning novels, League of Strays and Stolen Secrets, and have written over 100 articles. I teach group classes, too, and am the Lead Educator for the writer's program, Plottr.
Public speaking:
I'm a longstanding, award-winning member of Toastmasters. You receive the added benefit of having an author help you, as my specialty is not just public speaking, but constructing powerful, memorable speeches." less...
