"Hello! My name is Whitney Roden. I am a current student at Athens State University in their College of Education branch. I am 1 class from completing my minor in Autism and Developmental Disabilities and my major is Elementary and Collaborative K-6 Education. I have also been a substitute teacher (including long term assignments which required grading and lesson planning) with Huntsville City Schools since February of 2018. I also have experience as a tutor as I have been an independent contract tutor for the past 5 months.
I am passionate about helping students learn and I understand that many students who need tutoring don't necessarily learn well with the standard educational methods. Many classrooms go the route of memorization. While this can be an effective tool it is not always conducive to the way our brains work and store information. How many of us can recall most of the things we learned in school that were taught through memorization? The answer, normally, is not many. However, if a student is given the tools to figure out the answers more than just told what the answers are then they can use these strategies to overcome. My goal as a tutor is to figure out how your child's brain works and then use that to teach them strategies and build experiences that will lead to information retention and memorization without sitting in one spot and staring at a times table. I was one of the kids who didn't do well with just memorization. My brain works better with experience and motion, this is something that I have come to realize is true of many children. My goal is to provide the experiences that best help your child to grow as a learner and as a person" less...
