Having also taught students remotely during COVID-19 (what a time!), I am experienced with a variety of platforms (e.g. Desmos, Notability, Zoom) and using whiteboard tools.
What brought me to education? I started out as a Biology major in undergrad, but after a summer internship at the National Taiwan Science Education Centre, I decided to leave the laboratory for education--and I haven't looked back since! My desire to help bring confidence to learners has taken me to rural Japan, Massachusetts, and back to teaching math in California.
I strongly believe that all students (even struggling students) come to the table with prior knowledge that can be used to help them solve problems. Therefore, I teach with questions: "Can you tell me what you know about this problem? Can you draw a sketch of what is going on? How might this be related to something we've learned before?" I encourage students to problem-solve, understand concepts, and use vocabulary over memorizing formulas and procedures.
During individual lessons, I like to begin with a fun warm-up question (e.g. What Olympic sport would you create?) When appropriate, I also enjoy using fun puzzles and games to further reinforce math concepts." less...
