"Hello,
I'm Louise. I spent my career working with college students helping them to be academically successful. Much of my work was and continues to be with first generation students who often lack the confidence and in some cases, the skills that are needed to be successful. Throughout my career, I gained expertise in understanding how to reach students with a variety of learning styles including those with learning disabilities. I also have a counseling background and teach college success classes focusing on the skills and qualities that are needed to do well in college. I value each student as a unique learner with strengths that can be used to help them gain confidence in their academic abilities.
During my time as an educator and tutor (and as a student), I developed excellent writing skills both in narrative forms of writing as well as in research papers. I tutor students in writing primarily in their basic English classes but also help students with research papers. Students come with varying degrees of writing skills and some have done very little writing of any kind. Some lack basic grammar skills especially those for whom English is not their first language. Many struggle with finding clear ways to express themselves whether in narrative form or in a critical response to a reading assignment. I pride myself in being patient with the people I'm tutoring-helping them to find their own voice and expression by prompting them with questions or clarifying a what the instructor is looking for in a writing assignment. Success to me as a tutor, is when the student has achieved independence in his/her ability to craft a good piece of writing.
I look forward to hearing from you to find out how I can be helpful to you in your writing process. Please contact me and I will respond promptly." less...
