"Hi there! I'm Evan, and I'm here to help you out with your coding or computer science. I graduated from Columbia University, have a degree in Computer Science, and used to work for Google as a software engineer. I also studied at Oberlin College, so my background has a good mix of tech and humanities. This blend has served me well as a tutor, since I'm used to talking tech with folks of all backgrounds, whether they've been coding their whole life or for a day.
I've been tutoring since I was in high school, where I was able to help my neighbor move their average from C's to A's in a semester. Since then I've taught compsci at summer programs for three years, introducing high school students of all backgrounds to coding and algorithms. I tutored at Columbia as well, boosting grades in college-level courses from basic Python to upper-level compsci theory. Watching understanding bloom across a student's face is one of the most rewarding things about tutoring, and my enthusiasm for teaching and for the subject material makes the process a lot more enjoyable for both me and my students.
My years of industry coding experience, and my background in STEM education have been an absolute asset to my students over the years. I deliver results by meeting students where they are, and by listening closely to identify gaps in understanding. I get that everybody learns and understands a little differently, so by honing on in what works best for you and explaining in a lot of different ways I can make sure that you learn what you need, retain the information, and enjoy the process!
My focus within compsci is broad: Intro classes, Fundamentals, Data Structures, and Algorithms in Python, C/C++, and Java are some of my favorite. I also tutor in functional languages (Scheme/Lisp/etc), Digital Logic, CS theory, and am happy to also tackle adjacent math courses like Discrete Math and Probability. Finally, if you aren't in a class and are just trying to learn a new language, I would LOVE to give you a boost or get you started." less...
