"Hello! I'm Thomas, and I've been tutoring since I graduated college in 2012 from Tufts University with a BA in English Literature. I started working in Miami for a tutoring company called Prepworks later in 2012. There, I taught SAT, ACT, math courses through BC Calculus and Statistics, and Spanish. I took the GRE in December 2012, scoring 168 in Verbal Reasoning (98th percentile), 170 in Quantitative Reasoning (98th), and 5.0 in Analytical Writing (93rd). I moved back to North Carolina in 2013 with the goal of attending law school, so I prepared for the LSAT for several months. I took the LSAT in December 2014 and scored a 170 (97th percentile).
In 2017, I started tutoring again with a company in Raleigh, NC, called Triangle Academic Coach. I stayed there for over 4 years, and I had a much wider range of specialties including SAT/ACT, SAT subject tests, math through Calculus 3, Spanish, Chemistry, AP exams, LSAT, GRE, and GMAT. All told, I have about 6 years' experience coaching high school level standardized tests, and about 4 years for college level.
My approach to standardized test prep depends a lot on the individual student. While there are certain things I'll cover with every student (examples: all the question types we might encounter on the Logical Reasoning section of the LSAT, or all the punctuation rules we need to know for the ACT English section), I plan the bulk of my lessons according to the student's strengths and weaknesses. I typically don't use much time in sessions to do timed practice, since session time is valuable for covering actual topics, so I always ask my students to do at least a couple of hours of timed practice on their own between sessions. I also stress time management almost as much as the actual material we'll encounter on each test, as many students have a lot of trouble keeping up with the pace of these tests.
