"Hi, I'm Maria J. and I love math! I thoroughly enjoy working with students and helping them to understand and love math too. I have tutored elementary students privately and in the public sector since 2000. In 2004, I received my Masters in Elementary Education from Salem State College (now SSU). I have worked as a tutor and special education tutor in an elementary school for the past 6 years. I've worked with students in the classroom, in small groups and in individual settings.

The process of mastering mathematical concepts often produces frustration for students. My goal when tutoring students is to meet them where they are at in their understanding of math concepts and build their confidence and love for math. During my 20 plus years of teaching experience I have compiled a "tool box" filled with creative activities to engage my students. I always take into consideration my student's individual interests, intelligence type, and learning style. In order for true learning to take place, the student needs to process the material and apply it in some way. I also incorporate assessments periodically to evaluate the strength of the student's comprehension.

In order to avoid unnecessary confusion for my students, I base my lessons off the curriculum the student is using at school. Since I tailor my instruction to each individual, I always welcome input and feedback from parents, as well as the student. I am always readily accessible and provide a responses in a timely manner.
