"Hey there! My name is Cris and I am a freelance comic artist and illustrator. Ever since I was a child, I have been enamored with drawing and art making. By the time I was in high school, I decided to pursue it as a career and took courses like AP Studio Art and AP 2D Design to further challenge myself. I received college credit for those courses and continued honing my skills at Savannah College of Art and Design. Over the next 7 years, I received both my BFA and my MFA from SCAD in Sequential Art, and was published in numerous comic projects, anthologies, magazines, and freelance works. I was also a Teaching Intern with professor Robert Atkins, a veteran comic artist known for his work with franchises like Marvel's Spiderman and IDW's G.I. JOE series. Post graduation, I began freelancing at GlobalComix in their Vertical Comic Production department, where I reformatted comics like Marjorie Finnegan by Garth Ennis, Dying Inside by Pete Wentz/Hannah Klein, Stranger Things by Jody Houser, and Sera and the Royal Stars by Jon Tsuei, among others.
One of the things I learned as I navigated my education and career as an artist was that the structure and methods of traditional schooling did not appeal to nor accommodate me. As a neurodiverse individual, I needed to be met where I was at and have my passions engaged with in order to connect to what I was learning. As an educator, I strive to connect with my students and their passions regardless of background or skill in order to best suit their needs. I also acknowledge that the arts are very subjective and abstract compared to other subjects like Math, Science, or Writing-- which have a much more traditional teaching approach or are often treated as more important skills than artistic creativity. I strive to show my students that art is absolutely a viable career path that they pursue for themselves.
I would love the opportunity to tutor art students of all ages! Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson!" less...
