"Hi... I'm Serena N. I attended college in both California and Massachusetts. I have a Master's Degree in U.S. History with additional courses in American Government and Politics. I was always interested in History, American History in particular, but became especially interested in it after taking a community college class with an excellent professor who taught us what we hadn't heard in most regular high school classes! I went on to have some other very good teachers who continued to hold my interest in History - even a little beyond American History! After graduating, I took some additional courses in Political Science, and taught some American Government classes at just the right time - the Clinton-Obama Presidential campaign - for it to be especially interesting to my students! During my graduate study years at the Univ. of Mass., Amherst, I enjoyed working with the undergraduate students as a Teachers' Assistant, helping them to get a better handle on what the teacher had presented. I believe that learning, and retaining what is learned, is definitely possible when you incorporate a student's learning style with the necessary time and patience needed to accomplish the goal. Simply being available for your students can make a big difference in how they perceive their ability to succeed. And there's nothing more rewarding to both student and tutor than that moment when clarity and understanding are achieved by the student you are helping.
Some of the other subjects I have tutored were Writing, Psychology, Religious Studies, and a little Math. I helped students to breathe a little easier about some of the daunting writing assignments they were given, and saw some of them even enjoy getting their thoughts down on paper. Proofreading was sort-of a combined effort. As we went over the essays, I tried to point out any problem areas I came across, and then let the student work on the corrections.
