"I started working as a tutor in the 7th grade. My mom set up the appointment with someone in her church group about tutoring their son for 3rd grade math, and so ShoMe tutors began (in my heart, that is). "I started working as a tutor in the 7th grade. My mom set up the appointment with someone in her church group about tutoring their son for 3rd grade math, and so ShoMe tutors began (in my heart, that is). Word spread that I could help kids breeze through math, and my schedule soon quickly filled up. While other kids were mowing lawns and babysitting, I taught my peers how to learn. I didn’t know that’s what I was doing, I thought I was just helping them study for math, but I have since realized that I was picking up the slack where the school system had failed.

After finishing high school I moved to Austin to attend University of Texas, and got a job working with a local tutoring company. Within a few months, I quickly saw the flaws in their system too. Just like the schools, they were so focused on making sure that their students performed well on exams that they were forgetting to ensure the students actually understood the material. After raising my concerns and seeing no change, I decided to strike out on my own. I had been working with students since I was a young student myself. I knew exactly where they were failing and why, and I could always diagnose and then solve the problem standing in their way.

So while going through UT’s Chemical Engineering program, I worked independently with students across Austin, with great results. I learned the secret in how to open up the joy for learning, and I wanted it to spread like wildfire.Upon graduation, I worked for NASA as a flight controller for life support systems in the International Space Station. Having the privilege to work behind the scenes on one of humankind’s greatest achievements humbled me, it filled me with immense pride in my efforts, and demanded of me nothing but peak level of performance at all times.

Every day brought new emergencies that needed immediate solutions I had to help MacGyver, I never knew what to expect until I got to my desk. While here, I continued to tutor on the side. I love tutoring, nothing else I have ever done has filled me with such satisfaction, not even my work at NASA, and the thought of giving it up never even once seriously crossed my mind. The more I tutored, the more I began to see the huge flaws in our education system and mind set. Almost every student had huge cracks in their educational foundation, and it began to eat at me more and more. While at work trying to figure out how to better improve the water filtration system, I would also be thinking about how I could improve our approach to education.

In 2018, I made the decision and resigned my position at NASA. The next week I founded ShoMe Tutors, and committed myself to my passion full time. Now I work every day with my complete heart and mind fully focused on fixing the potholes that exist in the highways of the mind. Learning should be one of life’s great joys, something that draws us like a moth to the flame for our entire life, and not just childhood. Yet so many people of all ages get turned off of education because of the way information is presented, and miss out on the great pleasures of life. This causes us to miss out on so much of the wonder our world offers us daily.
