"I believe that learning and applying concepts is the best way to understand and remember the things we learn throughout our education. It is a far cry from the rote memorization so commonly found in public education, but throughout my experience, I have found that students learn much faster and retain more knowledge when they understand basic principles to the point where they can apply them in entirely new problems. Students learn multiplication faster when they stop staring at multiplication tables and instead look at it as an extension of addition. They understand physical vectors better when they can visualize each as an arrow on a grid instead of an intangible object in space.
Yet every student learns differently. In order to learn that the hypotenuse is the longest side of a right triangle, some students require visual aids, while others require examples of the application of the Pythagorean Theorem. One of my classmates struggled with the concept of the conservation of energy for nearly 3 weeks, yet she understood it almost immediately when I explained that the energy involved in a collision is converted to thermal energy through friction, or remains as kinetic energy and is merely transferred to a different medium. Learning what it takes for each student to understand the concepts is something I enjoy, and is what makes tutoring a learning experience for not only the students, but me as well.
Throughout my schooling, I have constantly been a peer tutor, teaching my classmates the finer points of everything from algebra to calculus, and along the spectrum of sciences, biology, anatomy and physiology, physics, and chemistry. I also hold a leadership position in my local Civil Air Patrol Squadron, in which my duties include teaching classes on leadership and aerospace, designing activities for the cadets, and teaching the incoming generation to do the same.
