I've provided tutoring for students in maths and sciences since high school. In undergrad, I worked for several semesters as a facilitator for seminars in multivariable calculus: meeting twice a week with 3-4 freshman students to teach, practice and review.

The first step is always to see what the student already knows, and where they get stuck. Once points of difficulty are identified, we have to find a way to describe or explain the underlying concepts in a way that fits into the student's framework."
