"Hello! My name is Karen, and I am a graduate student pursuing my Master’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Southern California. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Cognitive Science with General and Departmental Honors from Johns Hopkins University not too long ago. I had originally intended on pursuing a career in medicine, but fell in love with Computer Science during my post-graduate years when I was conducting research at the National Institutes of Health using neural networks for feature extraction. I am now pursuing a career switch, and I hope to become a machine learning engineer in the near future!
I enjoy teaching immensely, and work closely with students who either want to get ahead or need extra assistance. I am patient and professional, and like to take an organized and hands-on approach to teaching, tackling the student’s weakest points and making sure the material is deeply understood through sufficient practice problems and application questions. As a current student who understands the challenges of learning a new subject or field, I am passionate about helping others, and love to see students have a “light-bulb” moment where they finally understand something that they’ve been struggling with.
I have a year of experience tutoring high school math, namely pre-calculus, in a small group and one on one setting. I have taken numerous college-level courses in math, and am therefore comfortable teaching a variety of topics, including pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, and statistics. I am also very well-versed in subjects related to biology, with an expertise in neuroscience and cognitive science due to my undergraduate training. Although I am still pursuing my degree in Computer Science, I have been coding in Python for almost 5 years and very capable of teaching basic Computer Science concepts and programming skills.
