"I have a degree in Applied Mathematics from Southern New Hampshire University and have been a tutor for 20 years, specializing in standardized tests, high school and college math, high school science, college physics, and tutoring many other subjects including Excel, Word, computer programming, and literary analysis/essay writing.
My favorite subjects to tutor are Pre-calc, Calc 1 and 2, programming (various languages), and statistics. These subjects tend to have the most "fun" and creative problems.
I generally use the Socratic method for teaching, asking leading questions and building upon the students' base knowledge to have them teach themselves and discover the minute facets of concepts, but I will lecture and talk through examples if the student's learning style requires it.
My SAT, ACT, and GRE tutoring is focused on a two-tiered approach: content and strategy, teaching both the academic concepts as well as the best methods for problem solving and time-saving tips/tricks. Standardized test are designed to be confusing, so understanding how to approach a problem is as important as knowing the content. I help instill confidence and reduce anxiety through positive reinforcement, helping students believe in their ability to succeed.
I also tutor students online through the Wyzant platform. The video, audio, chat, and interactive whiteboard functionalities make tutoring math online as effective as tutoring in person. I tutor many students from all over the country, and the system works great.
In addition to tutoring, I have taught high school at Masters Regional Academy, taught college at New England Institute of Technology as an adjunct faculty member, and lectured at Brown University, Umass Dartmouth, and Umass Amherst.
I also have ample experience tutoring homeschool students (middle and high school levels) and generating lesson plans and a course of instruction to align with a student's (and parents') goals. I have taught science and research labs for homeschool students to accompany science lessons." less...
